Will it affect my child’s learning in class?
Our fully inclusive approach has tremendous benefits for every member of the school community in terms of understanding, achievement and confidence. At Brookside, we have a huge range of attainment and achievement; all is valued and celebrated. Every child is tracked individually: an annual target for attainment is set by the classteacher and Headteacher, based on assessment results and our knowledge of each child. We use a variety of assessment methods, including ICT based packages. Resourced school children are supported in class, usually 1-1, and other children benefit from the extra input too. |

Why is our position in the local league tables lower than average?
Performance of Stockport children in the annual Year 6 SATs tests is ranked and published annually and these attempt to give some measure of schools performance based on their Year 6 Sat`s (Standard Assessment Tests) results for the previous year. The measures are based on one of two scales: a mainstream school scale and a special school scale
As one of Stockport`s four Rescourced schools Brookside doesn`t really fit in either of these scales. Our league table posistion is affected by this and is not a true and complete reflection of our Year 6 children`s achievements.
Children at Brookside perform very well indeed, many attaining above the national average, and our ‘value added’ score (the progress made between Infants and Juniors) is excellent. As mentioned, all achievement is valued. All of our children are included in the league table (including those with severe learning difficulties) which lowers our ranking in the table. |

What are your school dinners like?
Brookside is proud to hold and renew the “Healthy Schools Award”. We have daily fruit in the infants and Year 6 run a daily fruit tuck-shop with toast on Fridays as a treat! Chilled, filtered water is available for all children at all times. Our talented cooks, Mrs. Mallinson and Mrs. Campbell, produce about 90 meals each day. This includes a daily home made option, baked potatoes, fruit, salad, filled rolls made with fresh baked bread and a very tempting pudding! See our feature “a day in the life of Margaret Mallinson.” |

Do the children do many trips?
We believe that there is tremendous value in class trips; children learn a great deal whilst on the trip and are very motivated to do follow up work on their return. We have close links with Lyme Park and are the “Guardianship School” for Stockport. Other trips include Stockport Air Raid Shelter, the Chestnut Centre, Marple Fire Station, Eureka, Blue Planet Aquarium, Ellesmere Port Boat Museum, New Mills Heritage Centre and many local venues. |

Do the children have any residential trips?
Every year, the children in year 5 and 6 enjoy a 4 day residential visit. In recent years, this has included an outdoor activity based trip to a superb centre in the Lake District and a stay in Ironbridge to link in with Victorian studies. The visits are a wonderful experience for the children - they gain hugely from their two trips in terms of their learning, confidence and self esteem. Safety is our first priority, with extensive pre-visits and full risk assessments undertaken. All outdoor activities are run by fully trained and experienced staff and a very high adult: pupil ratio operates. |

Do the children have swimming lessons?
We place great importance on this life skill; children from Year 3 onwards have around 13 weeks of lessons each year. Again, safety is our first priority; lessons are taught by a qualified, local authority coach. In addition, we staff the lessons to maintain a high ratio of adult: pupil. Children make terrific progress and develop their skills and confidence through the very enjoyable lessons. |

Are there any clubs for the children to join?
We place importance on the provision of a wide range of clubs; we aim to offer something of interest to every child. This gives the opportunity for all of our children to shine at something. At present, we offer: athletics/games, boys football, girls football, netball, drama, computer club, art club, guitars, gym, recorders, choir, skipping and brass band. |

Do you offer any music lessons?
Recorders, guitars and choir are offered free of charge. There is a small charge for Brass band (£1.50 per week) to cover the music teacher`s costs. We also offer and subsidize individual instrument lessons taught by Stockport Music service teachers; at present this includes brass, violin and percussion. |
